ISO 42001 Certification

ISO/IEC 42001 is the Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS) standard, which provides a recognised framework for managing AI risks, governance, transparency, accountability, securty and compliance. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded within business operations, customer, regulators and stakeholders may expect organisations to demonstrate that AI is being developed and used responsibly.

  • Demonstrate responsible and ethical use of AI
  • Build trust with custoers, partners, investors and regulators
  • Strengthen AI governance and accountability across the organisation
  • Identify, assess and manage AI-related risks more effectively
  • Support compliance with emerging AI regulations and contractual requirements
  • Improve operational consistency through defined processes and controls
  • Gain a competitive advantage when tendering for contracts or engaging with new customers

What Does ISO/IEC 42001 Cover?

The standard sets out requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining, and continually improving an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). It follows the familiar ISO management system structure, making it suitable for integration with standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 27001, and ISO 14001.

ISO/IEC 42001 consists of management system requirements contained within Clauses 4 to 10, supported by four informative annexes:

Annex A – Reference AI control objectives and controls that organisations can implement to manage AI-related risks.

Annex B – Guidance on implementing the controls described in Annex A.

Annex C – Examples of AI-related organisational objectives and potential sources of risk.

Annex D – Guidance on applying the AI management system across different industries, sectors, and business environments.

The ISO/IEC 42001 Certification Audit Process

Certification demonstrates that your AI management system has been independently assessed by a recognised certification body such as Approachable Certification. The audit is split into a Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit.

The Stage 1 audit is a document review and will confirm the required framework has been established. Your auditor will assess whether the management system has been designed to meet the requirements of ISO/IEC 42001 and is appropriate for the size, complexity, and nature of your organisation.

The Stage 2 audit evaluates how effectively the management system operates in practice. Auditors will examine evidence that processes are being followed, objectives are being achieved, risks are being managed, and appropriate records are maintained. This audit provides confidence that AI governance arrangements are embedded within day-to-day operations rather than existing solely on paper.

To maintain certification, surveillance audits are conducted periodically, typically once or twice per year. These reviews ensure that the management system remains effective, continues to evolve with your organisation, and supports continual improvement of AI governance practices.
